Think Outside the Box Weekend

Welcome to Friday. The weekend is finally upon us and you are probably making plans to enjoy your time off. While you are thinking about some things to do why not take a different approach to the weekend and try some of these ideas that will enrich other people’s lives as well as your own.

1) Write a letter – The art of letter writing has been lost in the immediacy of texting, Skype and FaceTime. All of those are useful tools to stay connected, but there is just something about opening the mailbox and seeing a handwritten envelope in your mailbox. The letter can be words of thanks or words of encouragement. Maybe you can send a letter to a relative you know is alone and would be blessed by some nice words on encouragement. If you are a parent why not send a letter to your children telling them how proud you are of them. Writing a letter is a very personal way to reach out to someone.
2) Volunteer – I had the opportunity to visit a community center this week and was impressed with the work they are doing. The community center told me about their needs and one of the biggest was helping hands. Most organizations I have spoken to tell me that they survive because people give of their time to get the work done. With budgets very tight the need for volunteers is great. This weekend take some time volunteering at a local charity.

3) Visit a nursing home – Every year many people stop at nursing homes and sing Christmas carols during the holiday season. But what about the rest of the year? Nursing homes are full of residents who receive few visitors during the year. Imagine sitting day after day with no one stopping in to just sit and talk? Talk to a local nursing home and see if there are any residents who would love someone to stop in and visit them over the weekend.
4) See a play – Many local theater companies are working hard to build an audience and would love to have some new patrons. Theater can be funny, engaging and transforming. While only 1/3 of a theaters budget is sustained by tickets sales, seeing a play is a great way to support a theater financially and the cast would love to see a sea of faces looking at them from the dark. And on the flip side you may get to see some amazing local theater.
5) Go for a walk…with a bag – If one of your weekend rituals is to take a walk in your neighborhood, park or walking trail, why not take a small trash bag with you and pick up some trash along the way? You will still get your exercise in and you will help keep the area that you walk in clean. It is a win/win for everyone.

I believe that giving to others is one of the greatest things you can do in your life. So many of us get focused on the importance of our own lives that we sometimes forget to look outside of ourselves and give to others. When you are looking at your weekend plans take some time to think about giving back to someone else this weekend. It will not only enrich their life but it will also enrich yours.
93 Days of Discovery
Starting this Sunday I will be beginning 93 Days of Discovery. It will be a summer long project that will offer topics and discussions on discovering the real you. Tomorrow I will be talking more about this exciting adventure. Until then, have a great day and don’t forget: Life is a journey, not a destination!
