beastly-gym-training-weights-habit-loopI have started working backwards with my clients.   In the past as we have been working on a life coaching plan we would spend some time figuring where the person was, where they wanted to go and then fill in the middle.   Recently though I have discovered the benefit of starting at the end and moving backward from there.   For instance, when you have a bad habit you want to break you usually name the habit then create a plan to break it.   Research is now showing us that by approaching the problem backwards you will have a far better chance of success.   Let me explain some more by talking about Cues-Routines-Rewards:

A cue is a trigger that pushes towards a decision.  When that cue happens over and over it becomes a routine that ends with a reward.  Cues are not necessarily a bad thing, but for many of us there are cues that lead to bad choices. It maybe that you sit down in the evening, turn on the television and open a bag a chips. You may not want those chips per se, but you have gotten into a place where turning on the television becomes a cue to open the bag of chips. For some it may be a nightly cocktail. For others it maybe stopping at McDonalds or Starbucks everyday.  None of these things in and of themselves are terrible, but over thime they can have a detrimental effect on your life.
Cues Routines and Rewards Bad
Maybe some of these cycles in your life.  Now you want to know how best to make positive changes. When you look at the end goal (the rewards) and begin to work backwards from there it is easier to make healthy, positive changes in your life. Most people who want to make changes in their lives work from the Habit first. They work hard to change the habit but often times find themselves failing because they haven’t changed the most important part of the cycle…the reward.

Take a look at the reward at the end of the habit. By identifying that reward you now understand the end goal. Now you can begin the work of keeping the reward BUT working backwards through the steps to find healthier things to replace the habit while still getting the payoff.

Cue-Routine-Reward-RunningFor example, Let’s look at Mary.  Every morning a Mary stops at McDonalds on her way to work to get breakfast. She will be the first to tell you that a McDonalds breakfast is not the healthiest way to eat. It is high in calories and low in nutrition. It is also an expensive habit. The reward for her is that it is fast and filling…though an hour later she is hungry again. Knowing that the reward is fast and easy and it tastes good are some of what keeps bringing her back day after day. In fact, the stop is so much a habit that she doesn’t even think about it anymore, she just stops. By looking at the reward (fast and filling) she would be able to make a major change in her life by making some simple changes that offer the same reward. For instance, she can pre-make her breakfast the night before by boiling up some eggs and cooking up some turkey bacon she can package it up, throw it in a bag, along with a piece of fruit, and have a healthy breakfast that in the morning is quick, filling and healthy. The reward is the same but the difference in the habit choice can be life changing. By knowing your reward you can change your habits to healthier ones.   Today take a look at some of your Cues-Routines-Rewards and then work from those rewards to create a healthy plan to get yourself on a journey to wellness.

Do You Have FLAB Feelings?

bored-black-white-wordsDo you ever find yourself sitting around feeling unmotivated or in a rut? You know what I am talking about. You start your day with great visions of accomplishing a lot. You plan to get some exercise, eat a healthy meal and finally attack that project that has been sitting there for months but at the end of the day you find that you have wasted a lot of time not doing very much and accomplishing very little. It can be annoying. When I hear this the first thing I think of is FLAB. FLAB is one of my favorite acronyms that I use with my clients often. When they tell me that they sat around feeling unmotivated I ask them to describe how they feel using one of the words in FLAB. What are those words? Glad you asked.
FLAB 1FLAB stands for:

lonelyI find that when a person is feeling unmotivated it can be tied back to one of those words. Your FLAB feelings act just like the flab on your body. It slows you down, it makes you distracted and it can keep you from accomplishing the things of life. Take a moment and ask yourself this: When I am feeling unmotivated, which one of the FLAB feelings best describes where I am. Why is that important? Because knowledge is power and by knowing your FLAB feelings you are one step closer to taking action and getting your life moving again. My advice to you is not to let FLAB get you down. Name your FLAB and then get up and move on. There is a great journey awaiting you out there. Don’t miss it.
